RYANS POINT SITE (BcCw-8)

In 2014, late Kejikawek L’nuk (maritime woodland or ceramic period) artifacts were observed during a reconnaissance dive in Lower Prospect, Nova Scotia. In 2015, an archaeological Heritage Research Permit was obtained to assess the site and a survey and analysis was carried out. The scope of the project was to delineate the extent of the Ryans Point Site, define the sites past usage and determine if cultural material was washed into the ocean due to coastal erosion, was submerged in-situ due to sea level rise, or was a combination of these processes. Establishing a relationship between depth and cultural material found was also of interest as well as determining if remains of submerged habitation features were still intact within the study area. An analysis of the site location with respect to characteristics identified for high potential coastal habitation was also of interest. Determining if survey techniques used for other types of marine archaeological projects could be efficiently used for submerged pre-contact sites was also a goal.
